Getting
the Smoke Odours Out
Most
fire and water damage restoration companies use commercial
cleaners or dry cleaners
to restore clothing and textiles removed from disaster sites.
When calling on fire and water damage restoration companies,
ask them what commercial cleaner they use and get a contact
person’s name.
Benny
Zaino, President, Battiston’s Fabric Care Centers,
Hartford, CT, has a separate fire restoration division that does
nothing but clean cloths and textiles from disasters. Until recently
Benny used ozone generating machine technology to neutralize
disaster malodors. After seeing an International Fabricare Institute
bulletin about the hazards of using ozone on textiles, Benny
decided to try something else, VAPORTEK.
Benny tested then installed a VaporSHARK to replace ozone in
his malodor-neutralizing chamber with impressive results. What
impressed Benny even more, the washing machine results.
Most cloths and textiles
from disasters are not dry-cleaned you simply wash them. That’s
if you can get the smoke malodors out of the cloths. Benny
tested ECOZ. He used 1 to 2 ounces of
ECOZ concentrate (commercial size washer) in the final rinse
of several wash loads and all those loads came out smelling fresh
and clean. Benny had to rewash the other loads several times
and still the smoke malodors persisted. The dramatic results
prompted Benny to send one of his employees from Hartford, CT,
to Springfield, MA (60 miles round trip), to purchase a 4/1gallon
case of ECOZ. Benny instructed that the other loads of laundry
be rewashed using ECOZ in the final rinse.
Benny says, “the stuff works!” New
business, new profits, satisfied customers.
Fuel Oil Recovery

Arnold
Quarant, Restoration Experts Corp., working on a basement
fuel oil
leak and recovery
disaster had a problem. "After
a repair company fixed the leak we picked up most of the oil
spill and cleaned the concrete with a heavy duty degreaser.
I setup a VaporSHARK and when the floor dried I sealed the
concrete. The VaporSHARK worked great and I thought we solved
the problem. Three days later the customer called and said
the odor was back. I said to myself that can't be. I cleaned
the spill and sealed the floor," said Armold.
"I
visited the customer's home to see the situation first
hand. Upon entering the home I could smell the fuel oil.
I
couldn't detect any fuel oil in the basement but the odor got
stronger.
I setup the VaporSHARK again to mitigate the odor and called VAPORTEK. Why after using their product had the odor come back?
I thought VAPORTEK neutralized odors. I used a degreaser to
wash the concrete and then I sealed the site. I failed to realize
I was dealing with an organic odor source and until I removed
all the fuel oil the odor would keep coming back."
"The VAPORTEK representative said that
organic material, fuel oil, bonds itself to surfaces and
contains living growing
organisms. The organisms eventually ate their way through the
sealer. Detergent alone couldn't effectively remove all the
fuel oil. The rep explained the role of their liquid BIO
C product.
BlO C contains the same essential oil technology all VAPORTEK products have but also has a stabilized blend of seven enzymes
creating non pathogenic bacteria, 255 billion colony forming
units per gallon. Activated in water BIO C consumes organic
material, fuel oil, breaking the organisms bond and allows
solutions to
effectively remove the remaining fuel oil. Adding all purpose
detergent allows for better solution penetration and suspension
of organic material."
"I followed the VAPORTEK representatives
BIO C usage and application instructions and solved the problem.
Now we
use the
VaporSHARK and BIO
C on all our jobs."
In restoration work it is always best to determine the source
of the malodor and eliminate that source, if you want to be successful
in solving the problem.
